The job

Straighten, replace or start again

Straighten the dent

A shallow dent in a steel panel, with no crease and the seams intact, can often be worked back out. The door keeps its strength and the repair stays small.

Replace the section

A creased panel, a split seam or a bent stile means the section has lost its stiffness, and it will keep folding at the same place. One section, replaced and matched, starts at $300 installed.

Replace the door

When two or more sections are damaged, or the panel is no longer made, a new door from $1,500 installed can be the smaller bill. The numbers side by side are on repair or replace.

Matching a panel

A section has to match the rest of the door in maker, model, size, pattern and color. The brand and model are usually on a label on the inside edge of a section. Read them out on the call and we can tell you whether the panel is still made before anyone comes out.

On an older door where the panel is discontinued, the choices are a close match from another maker, two new sections that match each other, or a new door. You get the price for each before deciding.

The bottom panel and moisture

Steel rusts where it stays wet, not where it gets wet. The bottom section sits closest to a damp slab and takes the most water off the driveway, so it is the one that rusts through first. A worn bottom seal speeds that up. If a cable bracket on the bottom section has pulled loose, stop using the door and see the off-track page.

Questions

Panel questions

Can you replace just one garage door panel?

Yes, when the maker still produces that section in your size and color. One section replaced and matched starts at $300 installed. We need the brand and model, which are usually on a label on the inside edge of the door.

Can a dented garage door panel be fixed without replacing it?

A shallow dent in a steel panel can often be pushed back and the door kept in service. A crease, a split seam or a bent stile can't, because the section has lost its strength. That one needs a new section. A dent repair is priced on the phone once we know which kind it is.

What if my panel is no longer made?

We say so on the call and price the options: a close match from another maker, replacing the damaged section and the one above it so the two match each other, or a new door from $1,500 installed.

Is a dented bottom panel a problem?

It can be. The bottom section carries the bottom brackets, which hold the cables. A dent near a bracket can pull it loose, and a gap under the seal lets water sit against the steel, which is where the rust starts.
